Forestry Assistant

Rate of Pay: $21.53 Hours of Work: 40 Hours/Week

Position Summary:
The Long Point Region Conservation Authority is recruiting for a self-motivated individual for the position of Forestry Assistant to fill an 18-week contract running from approximately April 28th, 2025 – August 29th, 2025. The successful candidate will be currently enrolled or recent graduate from a University or College program with a focus in Forestry, Ecosystem or Resource management. Reporting to the Forestry Supervisor, the Forestry Assistant is responsible for assisting with mapping of invasive species and trails, inventory and removal of invasive species, pesticide application, prism cruising, reporting and data management.

Qualifications:

  • Graduated or attending University or College program with focus in Forestry, Ecosystem, or Resource Management
  • Knowledge of various forest management techniques
  • Knowledge and identification skills of native and non-native plant species
  • Experience with invasive species management using mechanical and/or chemical methods
  • Experience using small motorized equipment such as brush saws, chainsaws, polesaws, etc.
  • Previous experience prism cruising
  • Ability to work in a team environment, accept and follow verbal and written instructions, complete duties to an acceptable level of quantity and quality withminimal supervision and capable to self-directed, independent work
  • Ability and experience to work outdoors to conduct field work in variable terrain andweather conditions (rain, heat, insects)
  • Ability to navigate using aerial photos and GPS unit
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy loads
  • Possess a valid Ontario Class G driver’s license and transportation to the LPRCAoffices
  • Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office software suite including database management, and report writing (Microsoft Word, Excel, Email), and experience working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), QGIS.
  • A negative Criminal Records and Judicial Matters check (CRJMC) is required
  • Previous experience managing invasive species would be an asset
  • Certified pesticide applicator with forestry and/or landscape license would be asset
  • Chainsaw license an asset
Responsibilities:
  • Assist with inventory and treatment of Eastern Hemlock for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid
  • Map locations of invasive species on LPRCA owned properties using handheld GPS unit
  • Manual removal of a variety of invasive species from LPRCA lands generally and more specifically targeted priority areas using hand tools
  • Applying pesticide to control invasive species as required
  • Create/Update GIS layer to accurately reflect invasive species occurrence and treatments
  • Prism Cruising LPRCA Conservation lands, mapping, fieldwork and summarizing data. Updating GIS layer using QGIS.
  • Use of brush saw and chainsaw for maintenance of LPRCA tracts and trails
  • Site orientation using aerial photos and GPS unit
  • Accurate record keeping of data
  • Assist with entering data, data management and report writing
  • Other duties as assigned
Location/Working Conditions:
  • Tillsonburg, ON with travel around the Long Point Watershed.
  • Hours of work: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday
  • Must possess Green Patch CSA approved safety boots, be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and with all outdoor flora and fauna
  • Available to work the duration of the contract
  • Some heavy lifting is required
  • Possibility of extension based on available funding
Term of Employment:
  •  Starting Date: Approximately April 28, 2025
  • Ending Date: Approximately August 29, 2025
