About Us

Animal Care and Veterinary Services is dedicated to supporting and advancing safe and ethical animal-based research at Western and its affiliates through the following services:

  • Oversight of Western Animal Care Facilities and those of Affiliated Institutions
  • Institutional Animal-Based Research Support 
  • Quality Assurance (QA) Programs
  • Animal Use Protocol (AUP) Review 
  • Sick Animal Response (SAR) Program
  • Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Policy Development and Review
  • Animal User Training Program

Responsibilities

The Clinical Veterinarian, Research Support provides professional veterinary services in support of Western’s animal-based research programs and those of its affiliates. These services are performed in compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and in accordance with the guidelines, procedures and policies of the University. The Clinical Veterinarian works collaboratively with all stakeholders to provide enhanced animal health and welfare, advance the strategic objectives of the unit, and support the vision, mission and values of Western Research and Western University. 

Qualifications

Education:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine licensed in Ontario
  • Post-graduate training in laboratory animal medicine 
  • Eligible for licensure from the College of Veterinarians of Ontario

Experience:

  • 3 years clinical and compliance assurance veterinary services in research environment
  • Comprehensive application of animal medicine to a variety of common laboratory species, including breeding colony management
  • Experience with health monitoring and disease control programs and strategies
  • Protocol, procedure and policy development, review and implementation experience
  • Project management experience is preferred 
  • Experience with supervision and management of staff preferred 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of best practices for handling sensitive and confidential information
  • In-depth knowledge of the regulations and guidelines governing animal research
  • In-depth knowledge of best approaches for monitoring and maintaining animal health
  • Proficient in veterinary diagnosis, treatment, surgical and anesthetic procedures in a multi-species research environment 
  • Proficient in networking, researching, comparative analysis and information synthesis in order to make fully informed decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong professional and collaborative relationships with colleagues, researchers and other key stakeholders
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to translate information into easily understood terms, summarize information, and provide a rationale for action
  • Commitment to continuing professional development and learning
  • Ability to work well under pressure and use good judgment in assessing difficult situations
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, be accountable and successfully complete assignments and tasks
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced work environment with changing deadlines and priorities
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate research activities
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and effectively communicate University guidelines, policies and practices to key stakeholders
  • Ability to recommend controls to manage operational and legal risks
     

Background Checks

While transcripts are not required for the interview, they are mandatory prior to any offer of employment. Successful applicants will also be required to produce a current, clean driving abstract & a current police information check from a police service prior to commencing employment.
